And the word of the year is...

‘Stuttflutt’ was picked as the winner when the word of the year was announced this morning.
‘Stuttflutt’ is an adjective meaning ‘locally sourced’, although the literal translation is: ‘short transport’.
“This is a neat little word which elegantly describes a locally sourced product,” Óluva Klettskarð, one of the three members of the judging panel, said in KvF’s ‘Góðan morgun Føroyar’ morning radio programme this morning.
Listeners had nominated the ten following words for the 2022 word of the year:
- inflatión
- jarðhiti (geothermal heating)
- Jenis
- olja (oil)
- orkuskifti (energy transition)
- príshækking (price increase)
- stuttflutt
- Ukraina
- tunnil (tunnel)
- hol/bora (hole/drill)
The judging panel represented Faroese language and media institutions. They picked different words as their personal favourites, but ‘stuttflutt’ ended up on top.
