Twenty classes have more than 24 pupils

On 1 February this year, 20 classes in the ‘fólkaskúlin’ primary and lower-secondary school system had more than 24 pupils.
The Ministry of Education is preparing talks with schools to find an explanation to why class sizes exceed the 24-pupil limit and what can be done about it.
This was the essence of education minister Djóni Nolsøe Joensen’s response to an enquiry in Parliament about why so many classes have more than 24 pupils.

The minister refered to the Primary School Act, which states that, to the extent possible, no class should have more than 24 pupils at the start of a school year.
However, he added, the way this law has been administered, it has not been possible for the minister to keep track of class sizes in all schools.
He mentioned the possibility of splitting classes into smaller units as one of a series of potential solutions.
