Many residents in the central region of the Faroes yesterday reported seeing a large military transport aircraft flying at low altitude.

It has so far not been possible to identify the aircraft. The control tower at Vágar Airport is not authorised to disclose any such information, and the Arctic Command has not responded to our request for comment.

We have spoken to aviation enthusiasts, and they say the plane is most likely a Lockheed C-130 Hercules, a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft.

There are no indications that the plane has landed in the Faroes because it has not been spotted on Vágar Airport’s web camera.

It resembles a French Hercules aircraft which was spotted at Vágar Airport a few days ago.

Denmark has planes of this type, but this one appears to have a darker shade of grey than the Danish ones.

This leads the aviation enthusiasts to conclude that the plane is either French or British.
