Climbing lifted to mainstream recognition

Climbing is now officially a sport in the Faroes.
Klintrisamband Føroya, the Faroese Climbing Association, has been registered as an official sport discipline under ÍSF, the Faroese Confederation of Sports and Olympic Committee.
Climbing started gaining popularity as an amateur sport in the Faroes at the start of this century.
“We now have so many regular climbers – indoors and outdoors – that it makes good sense to organise ourselves into a sports association,” says Rógvi Laksáfoss, a committee member of the Faroese Climbing Association.
”We want to organise and develop climbing as a sport in the Faroes by hosting tournaments, training coaches, developing safety structures around climbing, etc.”
Laksáfoss is also a member of Havnar Klintrifelag (‘Tórshavn’s climbing club’), currently the only climbing club in the country. It is located in the climbing hall inside the ‘Bacalao’ building on the western quay.
“We hope that our official recognition will encourage new clubs across the country. It would be fun to compete with climbers from Klaksvík and Suðuroy.”
