The most extensive healthcare strike in decades has been called off after six weeks and one day.

The opposing parties, the nurses’ union and the finance ministry, agreed on a three-year contract yesterday evening.

All nurses will be given a 10-percent salary increase over the next three years: 3.8 percent backdated to 1 January 2023, another 4.04 percent from 1 January 2024 and further 2.15 percent from 1 January 2025.

“These negotiations have been difficult, stressful and time-consuming, but it’s a great relief that we have now reached a settlement between the two opposing parties,” says Terji Sigurðsson, who heads the dispute resolution board.
