Multiple accidents on icy roads

Slippery roads caused at least three car accidents across the country last night.
Shortly before midnight, two cars suffered a head-to-head collision on the Kalsbaksfjørður road near the Kollafjørður tunnel.
One of the cars had five passengers and the other only one. None of the drivers were under the influence of alcohol. All escaped the accident with only minor injuries.
The road was so slippery that road authority Landsverk was informed that if salting operations were not implemented immediately, the road had to be closed.
By the time the crashed cars had been cleared away, Landsverk had spread salt onto the treacherous road surface, preventing further accidents and ensuring the safe passage of vehicles.
At 3.30am, police received a report of a car skidding off the icy road in Kollafjørður. The driver, who was alone in the car, escaped without injury.
Shortly before 5pm, a similar accident occurred in Hósvík. This driver also escaped without injury.
