Listeners of the ‘Góðan morgun Føroyar’ morning radio programme have been sending in their nominations for their favourite new Faroese word.

The top ten candidate words were:

• Avgjald (Charge/Excise duty)

• Fótfjøtur (Ankle monitor/Electronic tag)

• Gongugjald (Hiking fee)

• Havnarstongsul (Port ban)

• Heimloysi (Homelessness)

• Ja takk-tilboð (Yes-please offer)

• Lønarlyft (Salary increase)

• Tingkvinna (Female member of Parliament)

• Tøkugjald (Special aquaculture tax)

Vitlíki (Artificial intelligence)

The judging panel, representing Faroese language and media institutions, settled on ‘Vitlíki’ as their word of the year.
