About 2,000 people walked or ran through the new subsea tunnel this morning.

The opening ceremony started at 2pm today after which the 10.8-kilometre-long tunnel opened to public traffic.

As with the other subsea tunnels, the Sandoy tunnel is decorated with spectacular art installations.

The journey through the tunnel becomes a dual narrative, with each direction offering a unique story told through renowned artist Edvard Fuglø's vision.

In the Sandoy direction, the installations tell stories of Sandoy’s history and folklore and in the opposite direction, you get stories about Streymoy.
