Shifting gears: fewer cars, more electric

On 1 January 2024, 1,795 electric vehicles were registered in the Faroes.
This is a year-on-year increase of 585 such vehicles (48.5 percent), according to figures from Akstovan, the Faroese Vehicle Administration.
Both petrol and diesel-powered cars saw declines over the year. The number of petrol cars dropped from 19,236 to 18,528, while the number of diesel cars went from 15,267 to 14,770.

The past year also saw an increase in hybrid cars, although no specific figures are reported for this type of vehicle.
A total of 42,025 vehicles are now registered in the country, a slight decrease of 15 from the total registered on 1 January 2023.
