Sunleif Ramussen has started work on a piano concerto, inspired by the world’s biggest nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine in 1986.

This summer, Rasmussen will travel together with a cameraman and a sound technician to the city of Prypiat, which is located right next to Chernobyl and was totally destroyed and has since turned into a ghost city.

“Prypiat was a city rich in music. I will be looking for pianos damaged in the disaster and I will make some recordings from them,” the composer explains.

“I will use the sounds from these pianos in my piano concerto, which will also feature a slideshow with images of Chernobyl.”

Rasmussen expects to complete the concerto some time toward the end of 2022.
