War museum building ready soon

For the past few years the WWII SOR building above the airport has been restored with the aim of making it the home of the Faroese War Museum. 

The plan is also to move the Visit Vágar offices into the building.

The restoration work has now nearing completion, and the new occupants are getting ready to move in. The War Museum has already moved part of its collection from its current premises in Miðvágur into the SOR building.

Karl Jóhan Nielsen, the head of the War Museum, says the new museum will most likely open by the end of July.

A plan long in the making

The British Armed Forces built the SOR building as part of its construction of the air strip during World War 2. 

National Road and Tunnel Authority Landsverk used the building for many years after the war, but in 2011 the War Museum bought it with the aim of turning into a museum.

“Once all the insulation work is completed, we will be erecting two barracks next to the SOR building, which we will use as office space,” says Nielsen.

Visit Vágar director Sølvi Símunarson sees great potential in the new building: "This is an amazing exhibition room which we can use for all sorts of exciting events.”
