Suðuroy population on the rise
The population of the southernmost island in the Faroes has seen an increase of 56 citizens in the past year

After many years of struggling with a declining population, things are looking up in Suðuroy.

The island has enjoyed a population increase of 56 over the past year – an increase of 1.2 percent.

A total of 4,638 citizens are now registered as residents of Suðuroy.

Increase in four municipalities

Four of the island’s seven municipalities have experienced growth over the past year.

Tvøroyri, the largest town on the island, has enjoyed a significant proportion of the overall growth, with an increase of 48 citizens this past year.

Hvalba, Fámjin and Vágur have also enjoyed an increase, while Hov, Sumba and Porkeri have seen a minor decline in their population.
