Whistleblower system proving useful

Whistleblower system proving useful
The new whistleblower system for the public sector is proving effective, according to the National Audit Office

30.08.2019 - 19:50

Notices started coming in immediately after the whistleblowing system for public corporate governance came into force on 1 March.

Since then, the National Audit Office has received an unspecified number of notices through the system, although no approved notices have yet been processed to completion.

The new system, which applies to the national administration and public institutions, allows employees to expose any kind of information or activity that is deemed illegal, unethical or not correct within an organisation.

A variety of malpractice situations

Information of alleged wrongdoing can be classified in many ways: violation of company policy/rules, law, regulation or threat to public interest/national security, as well as fraud and corruption.

Personal data is kept confidential and will not be passed on to other authorities, according to the National Audit Office, which administers the system.

The whistleblower system is not to be employed until other solutions, such as the Parliamentary Commissioner or trade unions, have been sought.
