“Early election won’t solve anything”

Despite being a minority government, it should complete its term, which ends 31 August next year, says former prime minister and former Social Democrat leader Jóannes Eidesgaard.

Speaking at the Social Democratic party conference on Saturday, he offered some advice to his successor, current prime minister and Social Democratic Party leader Aksel V. Johannesen.

“My advice was that Johannesen should continue with his minority government because the prospects of gaining majority votes in Parliament are bright – especially now that Magni Laksáfoss has announced that he is now an independent MP,” he said.

No need for an early election

An early election won’t solve anything, Eidesgaard added.

He said that rather than focusing too much on the internal issues currently plaguing the party, Johannesen should hold out until after the election.

“There isn’t much we can do right now. Sooner or later there will be an election, and then we can try to clear the air and work towards creating balance within the party.”

Eidesgaard said that the party conference left him with a sense of determination in the party to strengthen its internal relations.

“This leaves me with no doubt that we will find some strong candidates for an upcoming parliamentary election.”
