One consequence of the rapid population growth in Tórshavn is an acute shortage of general practitioners.

The City Council has now announced that it is planning five new GP surgeries at Kirkjustræti in Hoyvík, which are expected to be ready this time next year.

Tórshavn currently has 13 GP surgeries, but due to the steady population growth more surgeries are needed. The Minister of Health has agreed to appoint two new GPs once suitable office space has been found.

The administration has been working hard to find solutions to the acute problem of finding premises for new GPs and to modernise the surgeries at Frúutrøð and Berjabrekka, which are deemed to be out of date.

It is believed that the best solution is to rent a building in Hoyvík, which will be turned into five GP surgeries. The premises are currently in the construction phase, which means the City Council can design the interior specifically for GP surgery purposes.

The new building will be 1,250 sq m in two floors with 40 parking spaces.

A rental agreement with the owner of the building will be discussed at a City Council meeting tonight.
