A car was yesterday found in the sea below the old road to Leirvík, Eysturoy.

A group of people driving sheep in the area spotted a car in the sea around noon yesterday and called the police.

Police launched a search and rescue operation, but it soon became clear that no-one was in the car or in the surrounding area, and as no person had been reported missing, the operation was called off after a few hours.

The car has now been lifted up from the sea. The keys were in the ignition, and the automatic gearbox was in ‘neutral’.

Police have spoken to the owner of the car, who was unaware that the car was missing.

There is a steep fall of some 100 metres from the old Leirvík road into the sea.
