Industrial estate project axed

The ferry port that links Streymoy with Hestur and Sandoy will not be an industrial estate site, as originally planned.
Tórshavn City Council and the Eysturoy/Sandoy tunnel company failed to reach an agreement on the project costs.

The plan was to use boulders from the upcoming Sandoy subsea tunnel project to build a 53,000 square-metre industrial estate site north of the jetty at Gamlarætt.
Not enough large rocks
The tunnel company was planning to blast stones from the cliff above the ferry port and used them to build a jetty for the industrial estate.
It has now emerged that this would become too costly, as calculations reveal that only 12-14 percent of the blasted stones would be large enough to use for the jetty.

The City Council was looking to sell industrial estate space at no more than DKK 1,200 per square metre, but the overall project cost would become too high to allow for such a price.
New sites on the radar
This leaves the City Council without any industrial estate site to offer potential clients, but new sites are being discussed.
Another industrial estate is currently being constructed at Sund, Streymoy. This project is headed by the Port of Tórshavn, which is independent of the City Council.
With the change of plan, the tunnel company is now looking to embed the stones from the Streymoy side of the tunnel project above the road between Velbastaður and Kirkjubø.
