Reporting ban on Faroe/Chinese meeting

Reporting ban on Faroe/Chinese meeting
Police have banned KvF from reporting on a meeting between Faroese and Chinese authorities

03.12.2019 - 08:14

On 11 November, the Faroese government met with a delegation from the Chinese government, but KvF is not allowed to report on it.

Twenty minutes before last night’s TV news was due to air, a court injunction was placed on any reporting related to the meeting.

KvF is only allowed to report who was present at the meeting – information retrieved through the Freedom of Information Act: the Chinese Ambassador to Denmark and Chinese public servants, Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen and finance minister Jørgen Niclasen, who is also responsible for telecommunications, along with Faroese public servants.

It has emerged that the meeting was initiated by the Chinese Embassy in Denmark, and the reporting ban was requested by the Faroese Ministry of Trade.

The matter will be brought up in court in the next few days.
