Runavík’s main road becoming narrower
Planned harbour road solution will not be completed in time for subsea tunnel opening

As part of Runavík’s new town centre plan, large concrete flower beds have been installed along the town’s main road.

The flower beds extend beyond the edge of the pavement, resulting in a significant narrowing of main road.

This narrowed-down road will carry all traffic to and from the upcoming Eysturoy-Tórshavn tunnel.

Currently under construction, the Fjøruvegur road, which passes along the harbour, will ease the pressure on the town’s main road. But this road will not be completed in time for the tunnel opening later this year.

It has been suggested that the narrowing down of the main road is an attempt to put pressure on the government to speed up the construction of the Fjøruvegur road.

But Runavík mayor Tórbjørn Jacobsen denies this, insisting that the town centre plan predates any plans related to the subsea tunnel.
