Jarðir, a company set up by farmers and landowners, has acquired the websites hiking.fo and heimabeiti.fo from tour guide and hiking enthusiast Pól Sundskarð.

While Sundskarð will continue in his day job as a tour guide, Jarðir will take charge of the websites, which essentially amounts to assuming control of the overall management and development of hiking in the countryside.

This presents a solution to the longstanding debate on whether hikers should be charged for walking in the Faroese countryside, says committee chairman of Jarðir, Niels Petersen.

“Now the landowners can decide for themselves whether they offer hiking tours on their terrain, and they are free to determine whether they want to charge for it,” he says.

“So now there should be no need to introduce new laws on hiking in the countryside.”
