Faroes granted associate membership of the WHO

The Faroe Islands were today granted associate membership of the World Health Organization (WHO).
In his acceptance speech, health minister Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen said that the new membership gives the Faroes access to a great deal of valuable health-related knowledge and research.
He added that the Faroes will also contribute to the international health research community:
”The Faroe Islands are at the forefront regarding testing, contact tracing, quarantine policies, vaccinations and in the general fight against Covid-19.”

Only sovereign states are eligible for full WHO membership status.
Countries with limited sovereignty can be assigned associate membership status, which grants them the right of speech and access to all board meetings as well as the general assembly.
Associate members may also submit proposals, but they have no voting rights.
