Maria & Anna and Jákup & Jógvan still the most popular names overall

Maria, Anna and Annika are the most common women’s names in the country, followed by Beinta, Katrin, Rannvá and Marjun, reports Statistics Faroe Islands.

Jákup and Jógvan are the most common men’s names.

Not much has changed at the top of the popular names list since the first list was compiled in 2001 as Maria, Anna & Annika and Jákup & Jógvan have topped the list every year since then.

Double names are less common now than 20 years ago.

Only two of the 100 most common women’s names in 2021 were double names: Anna Maria and Anna Sofía.

The men’s top 100 only featured one double name – Hans Jacob.
