Faroes are geologically similar to Mars

NASA, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has been on the lookout for a suitable testing ground for its Mars 2020 mission.
The choice fell on the Faroes because Faroese geological features were deemed to be similar to those of Mars, reports Jarðfeingi, the Faroese Geological Survey.
NASA recently invited Jarðfeingi researcher Uni Árting to join its Mars 2020 scientific team.
Árting has been helping NASA scientists to calibrate equipment used on the Perseverance rover and to analyse data reported back from the rover.
“This is still a relatively new experience for me,” he says.
“I have always had a passion for geology, the solar system and planets, so this is obviously a dream come true.”
Jarðfrøði director Niels Christian Nolsøe says he is pleased that Faroese geological research can be part of not only international but also interplanetary research.
“This confirms that the work we carry out here at Jarðfeingi is fully on par with other geological research institutes across the world,” he says.
