Danish artist Tal R recently requested an injunction on two Faroese designers’ plans to cut up one of his paintings and use the pieces as decorative clock faces in luxury watches.

Now the court has ruled in favour of the artist and has banned the two designers from cutting up the paining, titled ‘Paris Chic’.

Arne Leivsgarð and Dann Thorleifsson recently revealed plans to use the canvas in watches for Letho, their new watch brand, which they aimed to sell for DKK 10,000 apiece.

Breach of copyright

The court ruling states that the Faroese watch designers’ project is in breach of both copyright and advertising law because they want to turn Tal R’s painting into a new piece of art aimed for the public.

In addition to the injunction, Leivsgarð and Thorleifsson have been ordered to pay the DKK 31,000 legal costs.
