The country’s social services have for some time been enduring a shortage of qualified staff.

This has prompted Almannaverkið (the social services) to call for more targeted training of care and welfare workers.

And now the University of the Faroe Islands has announced that it is willing to help solve this problem.

“In a small community with only one university, it is particularly important to have close ties between the university and the political system,” said Chik Collins, the university’s vice-chancellor.

On Tuesday, Collins met with education minister Jenis av Rana, and one of the initiatives they agreed to look into was the possibility of doubling the intake of nursing students.

“We are also looking at expanding our pedagogy courses,” said Collins. “That’s a topic which we’re keen to look closer at in the near future.”
