Since the new Covid-19 cases were probably contracted during last week’s ólavsøka celebrations, it is not unlikely that we will see further cases in the coming days.

So says public health professor Pál Weihe, who is urging the public to be extra alert in the coming weeks.

“As we now have some active chains of infection in our country, it is crucial that we go back to practicing the social distancing and hygiene protocols that we all did so well earlier this year,” he says.

“It is possible that we’ll only be seeing a few more cases in the coming days, but it is nevertheless important that we all practise extra caution over the next couple of weeks.”

He suggests that people ought to consider wearing protective face masks in public spaces where many people are gathered, such as during rush-hour grocery shopping, religious gatherings or when travelling in public transport.

“Not only do these masks provide protection; wearing them also sends out a signal that you are doing your bit to prevent the spread of this virus.”

The professor also strongly advises people to postpone any plans for birthday parties and other events where large numbers of people get together.
