Genome sequencing of Covid-19 begins
New study seeks to clarify transmission patterns through whole genome sequencing of all positive Covid-19 tests
Debes Hammershaimb Christiansen, who manages the test laboratory at the Food, Veterinary and Environmental Agency (HS), will head the new study

Researchers at the Food, Veterinary and Environmental Agency (HS) have begun work on a genome sequencing project of all positive corona tests in the Faroes.

By collecting detailed information about transmission patterns and analysing data on who has infected whom, the study seeks to identify which virus variants circulate in the Faroes.

The study will act as a supplement to the contact tracing work carried out by the chief medical officer, says study leader Debes Hammershaimb Christiansen, who manages the test laboratory at the Food, Veterinary and Environmental Agency (HS).

“Whole genome sequencing of the virus helps us identify the variants, which will give us greater clarity about the infection chains,” he says.
