The new communication system for the state emergency services was presented at the Føroya Tele headquarters today.

The system, called Kima (Faroese for ‘call’), revolutionises communication between emergency workers, says police chief Michael Boolsen.

”This is a massive improvement on the old system. It’s almost as if we’ve been catapulted from the dark ages to the 21st century,” he says.

“Kima enables us to carry out our work optimally, finally allowing us to fully utilise today’s technological capacities.”

He mentions as an example that the new equipment can provide officers with an instant overview of a situation through real-time images from drones, which he describes as a huge technological breakthrough for the police.

Heini Østerø, the head of Tórshavn’s fire brigade, says that the old system required emergency workers to be within sight of each other to be able to communicate.

“The new system offers us almost 100-percent coverage across the country’s road network, which will of course make our job much easier.”

Føroya Tele and Ericsson have developed the new system.
