Tórshavn-Eysturoy tunnel opens on Saturday
The long-awaited subsea tunnel between the capital and Runavík will open to public traffic on Saturday at noon

When the new tunnel opens, drivers will get to experience the new underwater route between the country’s largest islands free of charge.

This offer will be valid from the opening day this Saturday until the end of the year.

In connection with the opening of the new tunnel, the other two subsea tunnels, Vágatunnilin and Norðoyatunnilin, will also offer toll-free travel from Saturday 6am to Sunday 6am.

A seven-minute ride

The first blast in the construction of the new tunnel took place on 21 February 2017, which means it has taken less than four years to get the tunnel ready for trafffic..

A daily vehicle flow of 5,000-6,000 is expected through the 11.2-kilometre-long tunnel.

The estimated driving time between Hvítanes, near Tórshavn, and Strendur on the Eysturoy side is seven minutes, and eight minutes between Hvítanes and Runavík.
