The Faroese constitution, known as the Home Rule Law, is now being reviewed.

One meeting, featuring leaders from all the political parties, has taken place and a second meeting is scheduled for Tuesday.

When the Prime minister announced the planned constitutional review last ólavsøka, he mentioned a few proposed changes.

One of these is a move away from using male gender-specific pronouns for ministers and MPs. Female pronouns are being used in daily speech, but the constitution only mentions male pronouns.

Suggestions have also been made that the constitution ought to include more provisions regarding municipal matters.

In addition, a general review of the financial elements of the constitution has been proposed.

International treaties

The current constitution states that international treaties supersede Faroese parliamentary law in cases when the latter conflicts with the former. This provision will also be reviewed.

A constitutional amendment requires approval by two successive parliaments.

The existing Home Rule Law has remained unchanged since its enactment in 1995.
