Queen Margrethe is delighted with the days she spent in the Faroes, she said this morning.

Asked whether there was ever any talk of cancelling her visit due to the recent spike in Covid cases in the Faroes, she replied that she has had complete faith in how the Faroese authorities have handled the Covid situation throughout the pandemic, so a cancellation was never on the cards.

She said she is happy to witness how the country has evolved since her last visit five years ago, specifying the Eysturoy-Streymoy subsea tunnel as a mark of prosperity.

The engine problem on the royal yacht Dannebrog, which prevented her from travelling to and within the Faroes, turned out to be a blessing in disguise, she added, as travelling by road had presented her with some novel perspectives on the islands.

Not the last visit

The 81-year-old monarch was also asked whether she expects to make another visit to the Faroes.

“We will have to see about that because I am not getting any younger,” she replied.

“But I sincerely hope this will not be my last visit.”

Danish children know too little about the Faroes

She added that the two small constituent countries of the Danish Kingdom have always been close to her heart.

“I learned a lot in school about the Faroe Islands and Greenland from a very early age,” she said.

“But I have a feeling that today’s Danish children do not know much about these countries and their people. Danish people ought to know more about this part of their kingdom.”
