Former MP honoured on Women’s Day

Annika Olsen was presented with the Brita award at an International Women’s Day reception yesterday.
The Brita award is handed out annually to individuals who have displayed special strength and bravery.
Olsen, representing government party Fólkaflokkurin, lost her seat in Parliament in December after deciding to vote with her conscience rather than with the government stance on two bills, introduced by the opposition, seeking to improve the parental rights of same-sex co-parents.

Fólkaflokkurin’s party leader branded Olsen’s vote as an act of disloyalty against the government, referring to the governing coalition’s internal agreement not to support any bills introduced by the opposition.
Olsen’s vote played a crucial part in the bills being passed in Parliament.
