New alcohol guidelines
People under 18 years of age are advised to stay away from alcohol

The public health board has issued a new set of alcohol guidelines.

The guidelines are based on new research which suggests that a lower alcohol intake than previously thought can damage health.

New research also suggests that there is less difference in health effect between men and women when it comes to moderate alcohol intake.

The new guidelines from the public health board are:

• Drink as little as possible because no type of alcohol is safer than others.

• People under 18 should avoid alcohol.

• Women who are pregnant or trying to conceive should avoid alcohol to prevent harm to their baby.

• Women who are breastfeeding should drink as little alcohol as possible.

• Men and women aged 18 and above are advised to drink no more than 10 units of alcohol per week and no more than 4 units on any one day.
