Is it okay to create art that is full of spelling errors? And do you have the right to express yourself in writing if your spelling isn’t spot on?

These questions are addressed by Danish artist Gudrun Hasle, who has turned her dyslexia into an integral part of her artistic practice.

Her new exhibition, themed around daring to express oneself in writing despite suffering from dyslexia, consists predominantly of embroidery and texts written the way she perceives them.

Embracing imperfection

“By exposing my own vulnerability and openly displaying my personal struggle with the written language, I want to create a space in which I embrace my mistakes and my imperfection,” she explains.

“I want my art to shed light on human existence – including the less glamorous sides – and challenge the commonly held belief that writing should be open only to those who have a perfect grasp of spelling.”

The exhibition, titled "Jeg leder efter ordne" (”I’m searching for the words” – with a deliberate misspelling of ‘ordene’) will run from today to 14 August at Tórshavn’s Nordic House. Admission is free of charge.
