Toward a more child-friendly school system

What are the best ways to help children who suffer emotional and social problems to learn, grow and enjoy themselves at school?

A working group was recently tasked with making some recommendations that address this issue.

Yesterday, the group handed a 48-page report containing nine recommendations to Djóni Nolsøe Joensen, the Minister of Children and Education.

The report is titled "fleiri hendur, betri karmar og skjótari hjálp” (”more hands, better framework and quicker help”).

“Our objective is to get more professionals into the classroom as this will help create a more child-friendly school community which embraces the diversity of the pupils,” says the working group, which consists of teachers, school psychologists and administrative staff.

Two three-year pilot projects are included in the plan to make the school experience more attractive for pupils with emotional and social problems.

The report also recommends a comprehensive plan for co-teaching (where more than one teacher is in the classroom).

Another recommendation consists of a research project about school refusal.
