Complaints over smelly manure in Hoyvík

Residents in Hoyvík’s Millum Gilja district have sent Tórshavn City Council a complaint about foul smell emanating from a nearby farm.
They say the manure stench is severely affecting their well-being and that they have not been able to open windows or doors since 17 July.
Some households are also said to be experiencing allergy symptoms as a result of the stench.
Doctor: it can be harmful
Foul smell is not a health hazard as such, says public health professor Pál Weihe.
However, particles in the drizzle may be harmful as they may cause irritation in the lungs.
“And foul smell obviously affects people’s well-being and mental health, so this is something that should be taken seriously.”
Not illegal
According to the directive on manure use, farmers are permitted to apply manure at this time of year, though with certain conditions.
One condition is that when manure is spread near residential areas, farmers should be mindful of how the smell can spread.
To the extent possible, farmers are advised to avoid applying manure when the wind is blowing towards residential areas.
The City Council says it is working with the farmer to find a solution.
