Demand for Christmas aid hits all-time high

The number of people asking for food ahead of Christmas was much higher this year than ever before.
“We don’t have all the numbers yet, but it’s clear that far more families have received Christmas aid this year than ever before,” says Martin Kúrberg, who heads the Salvation Army’s homeless centre.
Families were given large boxes containing food such as lamb, duck, pork, fish and sweets for the little ones.
To the extent possible, the Salvation Army assembled the boxes according to the preferences of the applicants.
“It became clear about three months ago that demand would be unusually high, so we were fairly well prepared.”

“The heartwarming thing is that our donors stepped up their game this year, and thanks to them, we managed to meet the huge demand."
Boxes were delivered across the country. The last ones were delivered around lunch time on 23 December.
Unlike previous years, when most of the applicants lived in the central region, many people from smaller villages across the country applied for Christmas aid this year.
“I want to thank our generous donors and our many volunteers who helped distribute the boxes across the islands,” says Kúrberg.
