Finance Act under scrutiny
The finance ministry is looking at possible amendments to the Finance Act to ensure that workers are paid their due wages

The Fishermen’s Association has notified the authorities of irregularities in salary payments for shipping company Thor’s foreign crew.

The foreign workers’ salaries have reportedly been paid into an account registered with the shipping company, resulting in uncertainty about whether they are paid their due wages.

The Finance Act currently has no provision specifying that a salaries account must be personal.

This, the Fishermen’s Association argues, is a loophole in the Finance Act, because there is no guarantee that foreign fishermen are paid their due wages.

Kristina Háfoss, the Minister of Finance, acknowledges the problem and says the ministry is working on a solution.

Hans Andrias Kelduberg, one of Thor’s shipowners, said yesterday that he understands the concerns raised by the Fishermen’s Association, be he insists that all fishermen working for Thor are paid contractually.
