The Faroes and Iceland are preparing a collaboration deal regarding language technology.

This became clear after Friday’s meeting in Reykjavik between Faroese education and research minister Hanna Jensen and Icelendic culture and education minister Lilja Døgg Alfreðsdóttur.

Sharpened focus on languages

The Icelandic Parliament (the Althing) recently set out to strengthen the Icelandic language as the country’s official language.

The Althing has also agreed on a plan to strengthen the cooperation between the three North-West countries (Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands) regarding digitalisation of the three languages.

Shaping the future of North-West languages

A working group with representatives from the three countries will submit reports on the current and future state of the three languages, providing detailed analyses of the technological challenges facing each language.

The two ministers also discussed the future collaboration between the University of the Faroe Islands and the University of Iceland with regards to student counselling and the development of language-related technology.
