Covid-19 situation is critical
People are now passing on Covid-19 as early as the day after contracting it themselves, which significantly complicates quarantine measures.
This was not the case during the first Covid wave this spring, reports the Ministry of Health after 54 people tested Covid-19 positive this week.
A single chain of infection
When the first domestic Covid cases since April were registered on Tuesday, the health authorities suspected that there were three separate chains of infection.
But extensive contact tracing now points towards a single chain of infection, which started at last week’s ólavsøka celebrations in Tórshavn and at a private house party the following weekend.
A few of those who tested positive this week reside outside of Tórshavn, but most of them are believed to have contracted the virus in the capital.

It remains unclear how Covid-19 re-entered the islands, but the Ministry of Health says we are dealing with a particularly infectious strain of the virus.
The chief medical officer said last night that if this explosive growth of new Covid cases continues, it may be necessary to start considering local lockdowns to prevent further spread of the virus.
