A 37-year-old man was today sentenced to seven years in jail, charged with assault with intent to kill.

The incident took place in Miðvágur on 9 December 2019 when the man fired a shotgun at police officers. One of the shots hit an officer, but he was not seriously injured.

The officers returned fire, and one of the shots hit the man.

Immediately after the sentence was passed, the man appealed the sentence and the guilty verdict to the High Court. His defendant called for a six-year jail term.

The prosecution, which wanted a ten-year jail term, is also planning to appeal the sentence.

According to the new procedural code, in effect since 1 January this year, it is now possible to appeal both a sentence and a verdict. The previous law only allowed for an appeal of the sentence.
