The government has survived the crisis that arose in the wake of last week’s yes vote on improved rights for same-sex couples.

This was confirmed moments ago by Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen (pictured above) after the leaders of the three government coalition parties met today to settle their differences.

Johan Dahl of Sambandsflokkurin, who voted with the opposition on the same-sex couples issue, is no longer part of the ruling coalition; however, he remains part of Sambandsflokkurin as he has been a loyal member of the coalition, says the Prime Minister.

Lots of work ahead

"This government has lots of important matters to complete, although we have come a long way already,” says Nielsen.

The government wants to submit some of these matters to Parliament as early as this spring.

These include the integration bill and improved parental rights for fathers.
