Pupils learn about war in Ukraine

Most of us are struggling to understand what is going on in Ukraine these days, and this new reality is particularly difficult for children to grasp.
“The constant media coverage from the war can have a very negative effect on our pupils, and it is our duty to help them understand what is happening,” says Hans Jón Thomsen, principal of Hoyvíkar Skúli.
For this reason, the school’s teachers selected ‘helping children in need’ as the overall theme for its annual project week.
“The project week focuses on Afghanistan and Ukraine, with an emphasis on children’s rights. Our pupils are also taught about the historical background of the war in Ukraine.”

Sixth-form pupil Bjørg Debes Fjalsbak says she appreciates her school’s efforts to help pupils understand what is going on.
”This war situation is really scary. Sometimes it feels as if the less we understand it, the better. But now I realise that it is good to learn about the background,” she says.
“At first, it felt like the war came out of the blue. But now I have learned that this is something that has been brewing in the background for a long time.”
