Tjørnuvík’s traffic-light trial a success
The trial system put in place to reduce summertime traffic congestion in Tjørnuvík has proved a success.
“We have had some minor technical glitches but overall, the system has worked really well,” says Sunda municipality mayor Jógvan Kruse.
“The traffic data we have compiled through our two-month trial looks promising, but the ultimate success indicator is that Tjørnuvík locals say they are happy with how the system has worked.”
Sunda municipality is home to three of the country’s most popular tourist destinations – Tjørnuvík, Saksun and Gjógv – all of which struggle with severe traffic congestion in the summer months.
“We will now go through all our traffic data and look into the possibility of introducing similar systems in our other tourist hotspots,” says the mayor.
