Prime Minister relinquishes mandate

As the Prime Minister of the previous government, Bárður á Steig Nielsen held the mandate to form a new government following the election.
But Aksel V. Johannesen, the leader of social democratic party Javnaðarflokkurin, yesterday asked Nielsen to hand over this mandate.
“Since Javnaðarflokkurin is now the largest party, we felt it was only fair that we were given the mandate to lead the coalition talks,” Johannesen said.
After some initial talks with the other parties, Nielsen acknowledged Johannesen’s request and decided to hand over the mandate to form a new government.
The party leaders will start coalition talks tomorrow morning, led by Aksel V. Johannesen.
