Optimism is brewing in Sandoy
Sandoy’s towns and villages are preparing for a bright future as the island will soon be connected to the mainland

While most regions in the Faroes have experienced a population boom in recent years, Sandoy has seen the opposite trend.

But with the Streymoy-Sandoy subsea tunnel scheduled to open in December 2023, this may well change.

“There is a clear sense of optimism in all our towns and villages,” says Skopun mayor Gerhard Lognberg.

“We have seen an increase in young families in Sandoy, and we are clearly seeing an increase in activity.”

This activity includes substantial development of building land, with preparations underway for 33 new houses in Sandur and 26 in Skopun.
