Sandoy lagging behind

Sandoy lagging behind
With a dwindling population, low wages and the highest risk of poverty, Sandoy is not seeing as much prosperity as the other islands
Sandoy locals hope the upcoming subsea tunnel to the mainland will help reverse the recent decline on the island

While the Faroese population has increased by 15 percent in the past 20 years, Sandoy’s population has gone down by 11 percent in the same period.

The island’s age distribution is changing significantly, with steadily fewer children and more elderly people, and Sandoy residents are also more likely than others to live below the poverty line.

Sandoy also has the lowest median income in the country, at DKK 213.000, compared to the highest in the capital region, which stands at DKK 284.000, according to Statistics Faroe Islands.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. The subsea tunnel, expected to be taken into use in 2023, is a cause for optimism among the Sandoy locals.

And real estate agents said last year that the tunnel plan sparked a great demand for homes in Sandoy.
