Planned changes to alcohol law met with excitement

Breweries should be allowed to sell all their products in their own stores regardless of alcohol percentage, and the wine import monopoly should be abolished.
These suggested changes to the alcohol law are featured in the new coalition agreement.
“This is a great plan,” says Einar Waag, CEO of Klaksvík-based brewery Føroya Bjór.
“It would be great if we could sell all our products in our stores. Every summer, we receive full coaches of tourists who tour our premises. They always ask why they need to go to another store to purchase our products.”

Johannes Jensen, the CEO of Gist & Vist, which owns numerous restaurants and hotels across the country, says that removing the wine import monopoly will make life much easier for the hotel and restaurant industry.
“More flexibility in wine imports will lead to competitive pricing and more varied supply. It would give us better access to test samples, which would allow us to host better wine-tasting events,” he says.
”A restaurant is only as good as its supplier. If you have restricted access to the right products – whether it be meat, vegetables or wine – your competitiveness will obviously be affected.”
