Steady rise in overnight stays

Singe the tourism industry took off in the Faroes, there has been a steady increase of overnight stays in hotels, according to Statistics Faroe Islands.

Last year saw a total of 168,000 stays, which is an increase of 16,500 (11 percent) on the previous year.

In this context, an overnight stay is defined as a single night spent in a hotel. If a person spends six days in a hotel, this counts as six overnight stays.

A majority of the visitors, almost a third, are from Denmark. Faroese citizens make up 18 percent of this statistic.

Foreign hotel guests stay for just over 2.5 nights on average, compared to 1.5 for their Faroese counterparts.

Last year’s growth came especially in early summer and late autumn.

Just over 40 percent of hotel guests stayed for work purposes.
