Higest risk of poverty in Sandoy and Suðuroy
Citizens with an income of less than 60 percent of the median income in the country where they reside are regarded as living below the poverty line

If you live in the southern islands of the Faroes, you are significantly more likely to be living below the poverty line.

In 2018, 18.1 percent of the Sandoy population and 14.1 percent of the Suðuroy populations lived below the poverty line, according to the latest figures from Statistics Faroe Islands.

At the other end of the spectrum were Suðurstreymoy with 8.9 percent and Eysturoy with 9.2 percent.

The poverty line is the minimum level of income considered adequate in a particular country. The limit is based on a median income, i.e. one half of the citizens have an income higher than the median income, while the other half has an income lower than the median.

Citizens whose net income is less than 60 percent of the median income are regarded as living below the poverty line.

According to this definition, some 5,000 people in the Faroe Islands live below the poverty line.
